Happy 136th birthday, Porters!

Happy 136th birthday, Porters!

The Porters business that has stood for more than a century has made a major announcement.

The Porters Group, has appointed Greg Porter and Gavan Porter Jnr to take the helm of the business as joint general managers of one of Mackay’s longest standing businesses.

The cousins will be the fifth generation of Porters to lead the business since their great great grandfather established Charles Porter & Sons hardware and building supplies in 1883, in Mackay.

Gavan Porter Jnr and Greg Porter have both held executive roles within the family business for the past 10 years and Porters Group chairman Gavan Porter Snr said the appointments were a natural career progression in the independently-operated company’s succession plan.

“Greg and Gavan Jnr bring together years of experience in their previous roles at Porters,” Gavan Porter Snr said.

“These appointments recognise the significant roles they have played in the business over the years and is a clear reflection of the Porters Group’s current state: ready to take on the future,” Gavan Porter Snr said.

Greg and Gavan Jnr’s fathers – Barry Porter and Gavan Porter Snr – and uncle, Paul Porter, will continue to sit on the company’s board as directors.

Today marks the anniversary of the famed Charles Porter’s arrival in Mackay, where he soon after commenced the building the Empress of India Hotel, which is now Taylor’s Hotel.

Soon after he established the Charles Porter & Sons hardware and building supplies store, known today as Porters.

Porters employs more than 250 people across the Mackay Whitsunday region at sites in Mackay, Glenella, Sarina, Marian, Proserpine and Cannonvale.

Whether you’re renovating or decorating, need inspiration and advice or want to share some ideas and project stories, visit our dedicated Inspirations team and ask, show and tell them all about it!

The Inspirations Paint Mackay store is located at 25 Brisbane St, in the Porters Mitre 10 Mackay building, behind Charlies Café or accessible via the Trade carpark entrance on Carlyle St.

Inspirations Paint Mackay was opened on 20th March 2017 and is the premier destination for trade and retail paint within the Mackay region.
Porters are proud to be members of Inspirations Paint, Australia’s largest network of dedicated paint stores. Our Mackay store is one of 100 plus dotted throughout the country, aiming to service trade and retail customers in the Mackay and greater region.

Our team love to see and hear about your paint projects, as well as work on projects of their own in their downtime. They’re here to help YOU and they have a gazillion ideas to share.

Meet The Team

Liam Da Pra

Team Leader

Liam is the Team Leader of the Inspirations Paint Mackay team and brings with him 8 years of experience in working with paint. Prior to moving to join the Inspirations Mackay team, he was at Gurgo’s Inspirations in Ayr and in before that at a protective coatings and automotive paint business in Bundaberg.

Liam said one of the best things about his role as team leader of his team of five is working with a great crew.
“When I started, I couldn’t have felt any more welcomed to the team. Everyone was so nice and are still so friendly.
“I like the social side of it too, there’s an opportunity to really get to know the customers and have a laugh with them too.”

He is a family man, saying that when he’s not at work he’s spending time with his wife and three children under 5, which certainly keeps him on his toes!

“Being able to come home and see my kids is one of the best feelings in the world. We try and make trips home to Ayr to see family as often as possible too”.

Karen Dohnt

Team Member

Karen has 6 years of experience within the Inspirations Mackay and Porters Paint team and specialises in woodcare and Porter’s Paints.
She loves all things arty and crafty and will jump at anything to hear your project tales or see your creations!

She previously worked in an accounting and PA corporate environment before she made a change (in a big way!) and applied for a position in the Porters paint department.

Karen said what she loves most about her role is that every day is different.
“While we have our regular visits our from retail and trade customers, there are always new challenges, problems to solve and new projects to help with!”

“It’s not the paint fumes down here, we’re all naturally happy!”

She says one of the best things about her role is that it’s fun and creative.

“I get to play around with the paints, help with colour matching and working with customers to create and work on their project. Some come in and show her their progress – I just love that!”

When Karen’s not at work, she spends time with her children and grandchildren.

“I have a wonderful relationship with my children, they’re always encouraging me to chase my dreams and do whatever makes me happy and we’re very supportive of one another.”

Hannah Giannangelo

Team Member

Hannah is a casual sales assistant with the Inspirations Paint Mackay team and brings with her 3 years of experience in the paint department.

She is also the team’s Friday Funny joke extraordinaire! Every Friday, she morphs into Hilarious Hannah and crafts a joke which is displayed on the A-frame that sits on the footpath at the Brisbane St entrance. Her aim is to entertain and make people laugh; and that she certainly does! Check out her jokes on our Inspirations Paint <insert link: facebook.com/inspirationspaintmackay> page for a weekly giggle!

Prior to the Inspirations Paint Mackay store opening, she had been part of the Porters paint team since 2014 and joined the Porters team in 2013.

While she doesn’t have a specific specialist area, she is happy to be tagged as a Jill-of-all-trades.

She says she enjoys the thinking processes and problem solving involved in the role, which could be likened to her interest in psychology, which she’s currently studying full-time at CQUniversity Mackay.

“I enjoy creating relationships with regular customers, and that I get to help come up with solutions to solve difficult problems. A challenge within this role is always thrilling,” she said.

She’s also well known in the team for her witty puns and jovial nature, making her a favourite with regular and new retail and trade customers alike.

When she’s not at work, she’s busy studying, playing soccer, spending time with friends and family, and playing with her pooch Pippa.

“It’s great knowing that every day is filled with possibilities of fun and laughter. It’s the simple things that make me happy – friends, family, food and my dog.”

Customers will be notified by email or telephone as to the availability of the ordered products and when they may be collected from the store.  Porters Mitre 10 cannot guarantee the availability of products or the time they will be available for collection, but all reasonable efforts will be made to ensure the ordered products will be available and within a reasonable time. If a product is not available, the customer will not be charged, and any payment will be reversed to the account from which payment was made. Customers must collect the ordered products from the selected store as soon as they are notified the ordered products are available.

The store will contact you and advise a collection date from your nominated store, this may take between 10-14 business days. When you purchase products online you can only collect your goods from the store you nominated in the purchase process. The store you nominated has processed your payment. We will deliver products within a 20km radius from your nominated store. Free delivery is available for orders over $100, with orders under $100 having a $15 delivery fee.
