Founded in 1883, by Charles Porter; Porters has achieved its steady growth through a diverse range of products and in store services and an ongoing commitment to exceeding our customers’ expectations. Now in its fifth generation, Porters is one of Queensland’s largest family owned companies.
A young building contractor, new to Australia from Scotland, Charles Porter originally began the company as a building contracting business on 13 August 1883.
During these early years, Charles Porter established himself in the community and was responsible for the construction of many landmark residential and commercial premises in the Mackay area. He also established a timber yard and a woodworking factory – “making and supplying all kinds of joinery”.
Over time, the company, through a policy of diversification and expansion, moved out of building construction and into the building supply trade.
